JOHN VIRTUE:TOWARDS BLACK, a solo show, places paintings and monotypes of London, Venice and Norfolk from 2003 onward alongside the artist’s latest abstract ‘black’ canvases, a pairing never shown before. Between them, they trace one sustained argument about black: moving from a mark that describes a landscape, a city or a sea to a material presence in its own right.
